Gold Pride get Marta, Boxx to Saint Louis
FIFA World Player of the year Marta fell to FC Gold Pride with the third selection in the Los Angeles Sol dispersal draft, instantly making the Bay Area club favorites in the 2010 title chase–if they can sign the Brazilian. Shannon Boxx was selected first by the Saint Louis Athletica. The Philadelphia Independence snatched goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc with the second.

Sky Blue shock Sol, capture inaugural WPS championship»
After a tumultuous season on and off the pitch, Sky Blue FC pulled off the mother of all upsets Saturday afternoon at the Home Depot Center. A strike off the foot of Heather O’Reilly coupled with some gritty defense and some timely breaks enabled the New York/New Jersey franchise to claim the inaugural Women’s Professional Soccer championship over the host Los Angeles Sol by a 1-0 score.

The Chicago Red Stars saved their best for last, winning their final home game of the 2009 season and avenging their worst ever loss against the Los Angeles Sol Sunday in front of a franchise record crowd. “It really wasn’t what we expected,” LA’s superstar forward Marta admitted afterwards. “We come to every game to win.”
