The Courtship of Cristiane

FIFA announced the 10 finalists for its 2009 Women’s World Player of the Year Award last week and half of them—Marta, Cristiane, Sonia Bompastor, Kelly Smith and Abby Wambach—played last season in Women’s Professional Soccer. In spite of her accolades, however, only one of these WPS players, Cristiane, did not have her WPS option picked up for next season and still remains out of contract. So which, if any, WPS team will win the hand (and foot) of Cristiane?

The Chicago Red Stars, who waived Cristiane in September, have consistently asserted that they would like to have her back in their fold for next season. They even tempered the offer they made to free agent Leslie Osborne—who eventually and perhaps inevitably chose to join the Boston Breakers—to keep enough cash reserves in their Cristiane coffer.

The Boston Breakers were left in need at the forward position after trading Amy Rodriguez, the top draft pick of 2009, to the Philadelphia Independence. However, they chose to fill that void by snapping up former Gold Pride forward Tiffany Weimer from the free agent market and filing discovery claims on two Japanese national team strikers, Kozue Ando and Shinobu Ohno.

There doesn’t seem to be a Cristiane in Sky Blue’s future either. They made their big move of the off-season by acquiring former Chicago Red Stars and current USWNT player Carli Lloyd from the WPS free agent pool. Sky Blue seems bent on making Lloyd their showcase player for next season, giving her the 10-shirt off Yael Averbuch’s back and her own supporter group, named Lloyd’s Loonies in an apparent homage to LA’s Marta’s Maniacs.

The Los Angeles Sol will be without forward Han Duan next season and Cristiane would be a natural fit to play on the Sol front line alongside Marta, her Brazil national teammate. But the Sol has reportedly lost $2 million dollars last season and most likely has been priced out of the Cristiane sweepstakes. Instead, look for them to go with Pavlína Šcasná, the Czech international forward they recently signed.

The Washington Freedom have room for another international player but don’t really need a starting forward, having retained Abby Wambach and Lisa De Vanna, their starters from last season. And with Abby Wambach already serving as their marquee goal scorer, adding Cristiane could just upset their apple cart. They already have two FIFA finalists on their team. Even if they have the money to buy Cristiane, it would probaby be better spent elsewhere.

FC Gold Pride lost one forward in Tiffany Weimer but still have four others left on their roster. And while the weather in California would is certainly favorable to what Cristiane experienced last season in Chicago, Gold Pride dumped all four Brazilians from last year’s roster which does not bode well for their budgetary prowess.

St. Louis Athletica looks to be the team with the greatest need at the forward position after waiving four of last season’s players who filled that role. A solidly defensive team in desperate need of an offensive punch, they need only remind themselves why they failed to make it to the WPS championship game and do everything they can to sign Cristiane.

The two expansion teams, Philadelphia Independence and Atlanta Beat, could both make a splash in their first WPS season by adding a high profile player like Cristiane to their game programs. Philadelphia has been the busier of the two, snapping up players in both the expansion draft and free agent markets, but both teams still need help at the forward position. A surprise move from either of these teams would add a lot of buzz and excitement to the upcoming season.
